Progressive House & Techno producer Daniel Portman had a little chat with us, find out what he had to say below.
1. Hello Daniel, tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in the suburbs of Zurich, Switzerland where I still live to this day. I fell in love with electronic music at a very young age. My first EP “Backside / Evolution” was released on Unreleased Digital. Followed by tracks on labels such as Harem Records, Big & Dirty, Armada, Anjuna Deep and on PinkStar Records as well as releases on my home label Unreleased Digital.
2. How and where did your interest for house music start?
When I first started to DJ I was already in love with dance music. I began in my bedroom, with 2 turntables and a mixer.
3. What was the first record you bought?
This was many years ago but I guess it was from Yellow 12" Maxi Vinyl.
4. Which production software do you use and why?
I mainly use Logic. I started almost 10 years ago producing with Logic. I grew into it and know all the features and functions in there. That’s important if you want to do music on a high level.
5. How would you describe your sound?
Well, I do music I like myself the most. To describe my music would as if I would put myself into a specific corner. I like to try different styles of music, mix up some elements from different genres. That’s what makes producing that interesting and never get rid of it.
6. Who are your favourite artists in the scene right now?
There are so many good artists such as Umek, Manuel De La Mare, Jerome Isma- Ae, Paul Thomas, Alan Fitzpatrik and many more.
7. What are your top 5 tracks at the moment?
Alex Di Stefano - Phase One (Original Mix)
Alan Fitzpartick - Always For Nothing (Original mix)
Marco V - Unprepared (Russel G vs. Lay & Browne Remix)
Daniel Portman - The Flow (Original Mix)
Paul Thomas - Buzz Killington (Original Mix)
8. What was your musical highlight of 2011?
Production wise has to be Port 6 with Tremulator, Demask & Play My C**t. On tour the show at Winterfresh Music Festival Los Angeles as it was my first gig in USA.
9. What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you on your travels?
I was in Moscow during the earth fire. On the way back to the airport everything was like fog and I missed my flight. I had to wait in the smoky air in the 40 degrees heat outside.
10. What's your biggest fear?
I don’t like spiders. Maybe a spider on my DJ desk :)
11. If you weren’t a DJ/producer, what would you be?
My basic training is in mechanics. Perhaps something with technology.
12. So what can we expect from you in 2012?
Some great new tracks of course and I will be on tour also. But there is one new thing 2012 holds for me: I’m going to start my new label. I will release some tracks and remixes of mine on it as well as supporting some talented new artists and tracks. Keep an eye out for it.
